AUTHOR BIO

Michael J. Kimball is a contemplative anthropologist and mindfulness teacher at the University of Northern Colorado. He holds an MA and Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and mindfulness teacher certification through the Center for Koru Mindfulness.
Kimball has dedicated his career to becoming ethnowise. His journey began when he was a teenager volunteering in the backcountry of Mesa Verde National Park, a World Heritage Site in the American Southwest that preserves important Native American archaeological sites and landscapes. From the first moment when he crept away from his group’s campfire and, following an arroyo to the lip of a canyon, peered below its edge to discover the twilit remains of an ancient, Ancestral Puebloan building, he was hooked.
Later, Kimball became a Mesa Verde NP Interpretive Division Park Ranger, started his graduate training in anthropology and archaeology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and continued exploring the depth and breadth of human culture and his own and others’ Cultural Discomfort Zones. Since then, he has conducted research in Western Europe, studying lifeways of prehistoric hunter-gatherers and farmers. He has explored ruins of the Maya Civilization and studied ancient Wabanaki rock art in Northeastern North America, counting their descendants among his most influential teachers. His passion for travel—in North America, Hawai’i, Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, India, Nepal, Jordan, Thailand, Australia, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Peru’s Amazon rainforest, among other places—has brought with it the privilege of gaining entrée into what fellow anthropologist and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, Wade Davis, has called our planet’s endangered “ethnosphere.” Kimball has also collaborated with and learned from the stories and lived experience of Southeast Asian and East African refugees in the United States. Further, as a pioneering “virtual exchange” educator, he has fostered mutual understanding between American non-Muslims and Muslims in the Middle East through his long-term partnership with Soliya, an international nonprofit devoted to facilitating intercultural exchange through new media technologies.
Kimball has turned his passion for exploration inward as well. Using the time-tested techniques of mindfulness meditation, he has unearthed some of his own biocultural mental conditioning, discovering “The Matrix” of human culture first-hand, and using these insights to chart an ethnowise path which he invites others to travel. He has practiced with a diverse array of meditation traditions, including Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program and the teachings and practices of both Mahayana (Tibetan) Buddhism and Theravada (Western Vipassana) Buddhism. In 2016, Kimball obtained teacher certification through the Center for Koru Mindfulness, whose mission is to bring the benefits of secular (non-religious, evidence-based) mindfulness training to “emerging adults” (young people aged 18 to 29).
Kimball offers presentations, workshops, and mindfulness classes to students, professionals, the general public, and anyone else interested in exploring the interface between mindfulness and the depth and diversity of our Cultural Matrix.

Learning How to Transform Reactivity into Responsiveness
When you meet someone who holds values and views that are significantly different from your own, you might react in surprising ways. That’s how culture shock works—often under your radar, sometimes upsetting your best-laid plans. In this interview, Michael reveals the “ABCs” of culture shock and how you can transform your negative reactivity into constructive responsiveness.
Five Principles to Foster Rewarding Intercultural Encounters
To successfully reach across cultural boundaries, it’s not enough to gather knowledge about other people through books and internet searches. You need to understand how human culture works on your and their minds and bodies. In this interview, Michael introduces five foundational Ethnowise Principles to improve your intercultural encounters.
Four Tools for Hacking the Cultural Matrix
Culture isn’t a place you live in, a language you speak, or things you possess. It is a “Matrix”—an entire world your brain co-creates with others. If you can’t see it for what it is, you will be controlled by it. In this interview, Michael shares four Ethnowise Tools for hacking the Cultural Matrix and freeing yourself from its constraints.
